Pumpkin Pie. Pecan Pie. Sweet Potato Pie. Stuffing. Yum. During Thanksgiving, staying active often takes a back seat to the preparation for, eating of, and cleaning up of the ultimate feast. But not this year. This year you can have both. There's a NEU way.
This is not meant to discourage you from eating. In fact, pig out if you want to, but here's the Game Plan:
The Day Before
Chances are you will be traveling and will not have access to traditional exercise equipment. This is the perfect time to go for a long run (or walk). Get the whole family involved as running or walking is something that almost anyone can do.
Thanksgiving is here and you can almost smell the ensuing feast. Use that as motivation to get in a high-intensity “depletion” workout BEFORE the feast. The focus here is on high reps and shorter rest periods. When glycogen levels are depleted, the food you eat will go toward restoring energy and helping you build muscle after a tough workout. The Morning After
After scarfing down some leftovers, dress warm and get in some family fitness. The typical go-to is a friendly game of touch football, but if weather or space doesn’t support this tradition, there are other options. Scavenger hunts are an easy way to get kids and adults playing together and can be done indoors or outdoors. Another alternative is to up the positive energy with Yoga! Not only is it appropriate for all ages and fitness levels, but there’s is no set time so you can fit it into even the busiest days of the year.
